Following on from Jim Bolger’s success yesterday in the 2,000 Guineas, fellow Wexford man Aidan O’Brien was successful today in the 1,000 Guineas when Frankie Dettori partnered Mother Earth to a 1 length victory.

Victory today for Mother Earth brings O’Brien’s total of UK classic victories to 39. This is just one short of the all time record which has stood since 1863 when John Scott trained the winner of the Epsom Oaks to bring up his 40th classic victory. For those not familiar, the 5 classics are the 2,000 guineas, 1,000 guineas (both held at Newmarket), Epsom Oaks, Epsom Derby (both held at Epsom) and the St Ledger (held at Doncaster).

Remarkably too, following on from 54 year old Kevin Manning’s victory for Jim Bolger, today is was the turn of another jockey over 50 to taste victory in the big race. Frankie Dettori will be 51 in December.
