Wexford trainer Jim Bolger has tasted big race success yet again today in Newmarket when Poetic Flare won the 2,000 Guineas, ridden by jockey and son-in-law Kevin Manning.
Starting at a price of 16/1 Poetic Flare won by a short head to give Bolger his second win in the race with Poetic Flare’s sire Dawn Approach providing Bolger with his first victory in the race back in 2013.
In another remarkable statistic Jim Bolger will be 80 this coming Christmas Day, while jockey Kevin Manning is 54, which surely makes them the oldest trainer jockey combination to ever win a group 1 race. They have been amongst the most successful trainer/jockey combinations for most of the last 30 years. Manning rode his first ever winner in 1983 on a horse trained by Jim Bolger called Keynes, almost 40 years later they are still a deadly combination.
Today’s victory brings Bolger to 5 UK classic victories. The first was the Epsom Oaks in 1991 with Jet Ski Lady, the next was Finsceal Beo who won the 1,000 Guineas in 2007, quickly followed by New Approach winning the Derby in 2008, and the aforementioned Dawn Approach winning the 2,000 guineas in 2013.
