A statement released this morning on the Wexford Football League’s Facebook page canceled the 2020-21 local soccer season.
“Due to ongoing level five Covid restrictions, the Wexford Football League has cancelled the regular 2020-2021 football season.
We want to thank all clubs for their patience and understanding at this most difficult time for everyone involved in the game, but would urge all to continue following the guidelines that are currently in place.
When restrictions are eased back to level two, the Wexford League will look at all their options for getting clubs back playing competitive games as soon as possible and are looking into the possibility of running some form of competition this summer if restrictions allow, until then please stay safe and well.”
The above statement was signed by the Chairman, Denis Hennessy.
A disappointing decision to say the least and surely a hammer blow to the local game, one has to wonder what options were explored by the league, and what engagement took place with clubs and players.
