Independent TD for Wexford, Verona Murphy, has called for the location of the new second-level school in Gorey to be decided as a matter of urgency.
The new school was sanctioned and later in 2020, the patronage was awarded to Educate Together. However, just 8 months away from the start of the 2021/2022 school year the location of the school has still not been confirmed.
Deputy Murphy reacted to this news,
“I have been contacted by parents who are very concerned that there isn’t even a location decided for this school yet. It is of course very welcome that the 3rd school has been approved, as the number of school places around Gorey Town has been an ongoing issue for many years. I understand that the admissions process has been commenced, but the location of the school hasn’t even been decided.”
Deputy Murphy has called on the Minister for Education Norma Foley to bring clarity for those involved immediately,
“The parents, students and all of the stakeholders involved deserve immediate clarity. It is a very strange scenario where students will be asked to accept a place in a school that doesn’t yet have a location. This will have knock-on implications for transport, and for the daily schedule of parents. Progress also needs to be made swiftly to ensure that the school is built and available for use at the start of the 2020/2021 school year.”
“I understand that the county development plan includes zoned land for educational purposes including a site near Gorey town centre. The Department of Education must act immediately to confirm the location of this much needed school.”
