Sinn Féin TD for Co. Wexford, Johnny Mythen, has called on the Minister for Health to back up his praise and commendations for front line workers with proper pay for student nurses, midwives and radiographers immediately.
Teachta Mythen said:
“Sinn Féin is bringing forward a motion in the Dáil on Wednesday calling on the Government to fairly pay student nurses, midwives, and radiographers now. I am imploring all TDs in Co. Wexford to do the right thing and to back this motion, particularly now in light of these staff facing a second surge and working shifts around the clock.”
“The Minister for Health has suggested paying student nurses & midwives just €100 per week. However the report the Minister based this petty sum on was conducted before the current crisis. This is not a time to be penny-wise and pound-foolish, or allow meaningless rhetoric or delays. This is something that needs fixing immediately and a recognition that the situation has changed dramatically. Therefore it is necessary and appropriate to return to the March pay agreement.”
“Where students are filling employment gaps they should be paid appropriately. A severe staffing crisis existed before the pandemic, and now we have a worsening situation. Throughout this pandemic, student nurses, midwives, and radiographers have been working hard and tirelessly every day to protect our families and communities against Covid-19. The Government must act now and recognise the invaluable lifesaving contributions these students and interns are providing during a worldwide pandemic. It’s time to do the right thing and ensure they are paid properly. They deserve respect and must be protected from exploitation.”
“Sinn Féin’s motion next week will ensure that the March pay agreement returns. This is more important now than ever. It is only right to help the very people who are helping us. The Government must be confronted and be brought to their senses on this issue. Sinn Féin will stand up for student nurses, midwives and radiographers to ensure they are treated fairly. The decision to pay student nurses, midwives and Radiographers lies with the Minister for Health but Minister Harris is also responsible for protecting students from exploitation. The time to deliver is now”.
