Enniscorthy L1 eye up the double

Enniscorthy 7
Clontarf 0

On a windy Saturday morning Enniscorthy’s ladies first eleven took on Clontarf at the Astro Active Centre in Division 6 of Leinster League and emerged with a highly creditable 7-0 win.

Enniscorthy set the tempo from the start with constant pressure on the Clontarf goal. Good link-up play between the back four consisting of Laura Smith, Julie Watchorn, Anna Flood, and Leah Chapman allowed the forwards to find themselves in good attacking positions. After numerous attacks, Enniscorthy won the first penalty corner of the game, after a goalmouth scramble Izzy Walsh finished to the back of the Clontarf net.

The pressure continued from the hosts. After great work between Ciara Kelly and Leah Chapman up the right-hand side it led to another penalty corner, won by May Wickham. After a precise injection by Kelly, it was the right midfielder who applied the finish when the ball was returned and made no mistake.

After numerous more attacks and some brilliant saves by the Clontarf goalkeeper, Enniscorthy won another penalty corner; this time a direct shot from Rebecca Ogilvie helped Enniscorthy to a three-goal lead at halftime.

In the second half, the tempo began to slow but Clontarf kept going until the end. Enniscorthy’s fourth goal came after Leah Kidd won a penalty corner and Niamh Ogilivie applied the finish right to the bottom corner of the Clontarf goal. Great work from Anna Flood down the left-hand side allowed Rebecca Ogilvie to deliver a great ball across to the penalty spot for a waiting Wickham to slot home Enniscorthy’s fifth goal.

The continued pressure from the forwards allowed the midfield of Aoife Mahon, Niamh Ogilvie, and Ciara Kelly to distribute the ball across the pitch at ease. Nearly straight after the restart, Enniscorthy had their sixth goal after a great pass from Walsh, Kidd beat the oncoming challenge from the Clontarf goalkeeper to place the ball into the bottom corner of the net.

With just moments remaining Laura Smith got Enniscorthy’s seventh and final goal of the day, the ball finished to the net after a great piece of individual skill from the center-back. This goal finished a great day for Enniscorthy with Norah Mc Ginty having yet another clean sheet.

This win puts Enniscorthy two points clear in the Division 6 Leinster league, with a game in hand over closest rivals Our Lady’s. The league leaders face Newbridge at home and Monkstown away next weekend.

Squad: Norah McGinty, Leah Chapman, Julie Watchorn, Laura Smith, Anna Flood, Ciara Kelly, Niamh Ogilvie, Aoife Mahon, Niamh Rochford, Leah Kidd, May Wickham, Izzy Walsh, Rebecca Ogilvie

The dream of a second double in two years is very much alive for the ladies first eleven following a 2-0 win over Dublin outfit Avoca in the Division 5/6 Cup semi-final on Sunday afternoon. Niamh Rochford had the Slaneysiders a goal up after the first quarter but it took a late winner from May Wickham to ensure Enniscorthy will play Division 5 side Rathgar in the final.
