Wexford keep the pressure on

Pembroke Wanderers 1
Wexford 5

Wexford 1st travelled to a windswept Bray pitch on Saturday last to take on Pembroke Wanderers 4ths in Division 4 of the Leinster League. The last meeting of these teams saw Pembroke edge out a 2-1 victory.

The game was barely underway and Wexford hadn’t time to settle when Pembroke got into Wexfords half and scored. Wexford needed to dig deep and remain calm and as the first quarter progressed Wexford began to gain the higher percentage possession of play. Wexford were awarded a short corner, where they decided to implement a training ground move where Sinead McDonnell, Miriam Lambert, Louise Fanning combined giving Ciara Pettit a goal-scoring opportunity which she converted whilst under immense pressure from the Pembroke backline.

Wexford now began to control the game. Wexford secured a second short corner, with the same group connecting again but this time Louise Fanning struck the ball at pace past the Pembroke defence.

Wexford’s Anna Finan, Maeve Buckley and Heather O’Leary added pace and youth to the side as they ran the lines creating so many opportunities for the Wexford side.

Next on the score sheet was Sinead McDonnell as she linked up on yet another short corner and swept the ball past the Pembrokes keeper. Wexford’s dominance and pressure continued to pay dividends as Maeve Buckley received the ball in the Pembroke circle but calmly held possession, forcing a foul from the Pembroke side to win another short corner for Wexford. Wexford’s fourth goal was a carbon copy of their second as Ciara Pettit reverse stopped the ball perfectly from Sinead McDonnell, Miriam Lambert then slipped the ball to Louise Fanning who hammered the ball to the back of the goal leaving Pembroke’s defence no chance.

Not to be left off the scoresheet the final score came from Miriam Lambert who ran at the Pembroke defence, Maeve Buckley and Louise Fanning ran wide dragging their players with them leaving Lambert one on one with the keeper and she slipped it past the keeper, leaving the game at 5-1. Overall it was a great team performance by Wexford from Fiona Buttle in goal up to the forward line.
