Wexford come out best in Trinity

The Wexford 1sts side following their league victory over Trinity on Saturday

Trinity College 0
Wexford 1

The weekend saw Wexford 1st line out again Trinity 2nds in Division 4 of the Leinster league. A win would see Wexford secure second spot on the league table. The game was played in a cold blustery Trinity sports grounds in Santry on Saturday.

Wexford lined out again this week missing a number of their starting eleven but thankfully could call upon 2nds players Meave Buckley, Sarah Jones and Anna Finan to add strength to the squad.

The game was played with pace and tension as both teams tried desperately hard to break the deadlock. Trinity arguably had the better percentage of possession early on and capitalised on this by winning six penalty corners in the first half. Wexford will be pleased with how they mopped up this pressure as the defensive line remained solid and denied Trinity at every opportunity.

Leonie Grant and Ciara O’Neill took charge in defence and led the team from the defence out. As Trinity squandered chances Wexfords confidence started to build with Ciara Pettit and Louise Fanning, Sharon Kenny and Avril Jones clocking up the miles in midfield, setting up Wexfords front line at every opportunity. Joanne Grant proved every bit the versatile player as she rotated between forward and defence.

As this game was nearing the end and looking like an inevitable draw, Anna Finan showed a piece of excellent individual play as she got onto the end of a midfield pass and calmly weaved her way through the Trinity defence leaving them no option but to foul her resulting in a penalty corner.

Ciara McGrath pushed out the ball perfectly for Ciara Pettit to stop and Miriam Lambert lined up and took a shot securing the much-needed goal.

Wexford ran out 1-0 winners on Saturday and now sit in second place in the league table.
