Railway Union 0
After a run of home games, Gorey Ladies Hockey Team were on the road again for their quarter-final cup tie with Railway Union. Gorey traveled with a strong squad and after a great training session on Thursday night were more than ready for the match.
Sarah Merrigan got the game underway and pushed back for Gorey. Gorey started strong but so too did Railway as they broke into the circle and Abi Nuzum was called on to clear the ball with a forceful kick. Gorey began to settle and play their game with runs from Muireann Deegan and Zoe Kenny on the wings. As the first quarter drew to a close Gorey had a run of short corners and were unlucky not to take the lead.
In the second quarter, Gorey got their reward. Bridget Kenny took a free out passing the ball to Robyn Swords on the left. Robyn sent the ball across the pitch for Muireann to run on to and push between the posts for a beautifully worked goal. One-nil up allowed Gorey to settle further. With Ailbhe Booth and Heather O’Sullivan holding the centre Gorey were able to push forward and Sarah was unlucky not to get on the end of a pass from Muireann in the circle.
After half time Gorey made some changes in personnel and positioning. Play switched well across the pitch and allowed those on the wings more freedom on the ball. Laura Griffin was on hand as Railway attempted to clear their lines, and sent a stunning ball goal-bound and Lynne Copeland was unfortunate not to connect with it for another goal.
With the time ticking down and Gorey, only one goal to the good the final quarter meant a big Gorey push. Ruth Evans played stunning hockey in defence to frustrate the Railway attack, while Sadhbh Corcoran made lightening breaks down the right. Vicky Hughes and Odile Evans took turns to use the space on the left and keep the play moving forward. Then true to form Zoe was on hand to increase the margin, receiving the ball from Sarah and sending it sweetly passed the goalie. Hot on her heels Sadhbh took a shot on goal which the goalie saved only to roll it into the path of Sarah who wasn’t going to miss this one, 3 nil to Gorey. Lynne sealed the win with goal number four from a pass from Aislinn and a sweep into the back of the goal.
A great result for Gorey who now progress to the semi-finals of the Div 9-10 cup.
