Gorey continue their winning streak

Gorey 11
Malahide Fingal 0

With last weekend’s match postponed due to a frozen pitch, the Gorey ladies team were itching to go in today’s encounter with Malahide Fingal. Malahide Fingal took push back and started brightly but it was to be short-lived as Muireann Deegan got the scoring underway in the second minute. Pressing hard again Gorey played high and were rewarded when Aislinn Buttle doubled the score on 10 minutes following a superb solo run from beyond the 25. Another solo run two minutes later saw Muireann bring the ball into the circle and execute a smashing slap hit into the left corner.

In the second quarter Gorey kept the pressure on with strong forward play keeping Malahide back. Ailbhe Booth was unlucky not to score, while Robyn Swords made some damaging runs up the left-wing. Forward play allowed the defence of Vicky Hughes, Bridget Kenny, Odile Evans, and Ruth Evans more time to move the ball around and switch play from side to side. With Muireann taking a break following an unfortunate slip Aislinn took over duties on the right-wing. A fast pass across the goal somehow avoided feet and sticks and rolled over the line for her second goal.

After half time Zoe Kenny got her name on the score sheet as play raced up the right-wing with to Heather O’Sullivan and Sadhbh Corcoran before passing across the goal to Sarah Merrigan and on to Zoe to sweep in. Aislinn followed this up with another goal, set up by Bridget. Malahide Fingal made some breaks after half time but they were closed down by the Gorey defence and Abi Nuzum was untroubled in the goal.

Into the final quarter and another cross from Heather to Zoe three minutes in resulted in her second. Having had a quiet match in the short corner department Gorey we’re finally awarded their first of the match and were unlucky not to score. This was rectified moments later when another short corner was pushed out by Lynne Copeland to Sarah who returned the ball to Lynne to sweep into the goal. They repeated this play on the next short corner for another goal before Muireann and Aislinn added to their totals in the last five minutes.

A fast and furious performance from Gorey today leaves them six points clear at the top of the table and all fired up for their cup match next weekend against Railway Union.
