Welcome for Council’s youngest member Andrew Bolger

Cllr. Andrew Bolger is accompanied by Cathaoirleach of Wexford County Council, Cllr Michael Sheehan and by former councillor Malcolm Byrne, T.D

It was a very proud day for Andrew Bolger, (22), from Gorey who became Wexford County Council’s newest and youngest member following his co-option at today’s specially convened meeting of Wexford County Council held at Carricklawn Headquarters in Wexford.

The casual vacancy in the Council arose following Malcolm Byrne’s success at the recent Bye-Election. As it is not possible for an elected public representative to hold seats at local and national level at the same time, Malcolm’s seat on Wexford County Council became vacant on his election to Dáil Éireann.

Deputy Byrne attended today’s meeting of Wexford County Council where he was among the first to congratulate Cllr. Bolger on his success in becoming an elected member of the Council. A law graduate, he defeated local rivals Jack Redmond and Michael Dwyer in a Fianna Fáil convention to fill the vacancy on Wexford County Council.

In his address to the Council today, Cllr. Bolger thanked the members and executive for their support and encouragement as he takes up his position on the Council. While he promises to work for all the people of Wexford, given his relative youth Cllr. Bolger is likely to be an advocate for young people in particular and no doubt he will wish to reflect their views and opinions as he and the other members of the Council engage in debate during the Council’s many decision and policy-making processes.

At today’s meeting, Cllr. Bolger, who was accompanied by his parents Maria Lane and Michael Bolger, was proposed by Cllr. Joe Sullivan and seconded by Cllr. Pip Breen. He received a unanimous welcome from all sides in the chamber.

Cllr. Bolger will be also welcomed at tomorrow’s monthly meeting of Gorey-Kilmuckridge Municipal District where the first item on the agenda will be the replacement of Malcolm Byrne TD, as Cathaoirleach.
