Sadness at loss of Gorey Credit Union founder Stan

STAN HEMPENSTALL

Gorey and district are in mourning following the lamented loss of Stan Hempenstall, who was one of the founder members of Gorey Credit Union that played such a pivoted role in the economic needs and benefits to the community for over half a century.

Stan, (91), of Marlfield Cottage, Courtown Road, Gorey, passed away on Sunday, December 29th. Beloved husband of the late Mabel and loving father of Iris and Robert. Deeply regretted by his daughter, son, grand-daughter Lisa, great grandson Jacob, daughter-in-law Attracta, extended family, relatives, neighbours and friends. “AT REST”

Stan, who is lovingly described as “a true gentleman” in many tributes on social media was one of 16 people who attended the meeting that founded Gorey Credit Union in 1966.

In March 2016, Gorey Credit Union celebrated its 50th anniversary and was honoured as Grand Marshal at the St Patrick’s Day Parade in recognition of its contribution to the town and district.  It was another proud moment for the surviving founder members; Stan Hempenstall, Pat Doyle, Joe Sheehan and Tony Woulfe.

Gorey Credit Union has rebranded in recent years. The trading name has changed to Altura Credit Union Ltd, however, history will record that thousands of families are grateful to Stan and his foresighted founder members for their contribution to the community when times were hard and basic needs were many.

FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS. Reposing at Murphy’s Funeral Home, The Avenue, Gorey today, Monday, December 30th from 4 pm until 8 pm. Removal from Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 31st at 1.30 pm to Christ Church Gorey for Funeral Service at 2 pm followed by burial in the adjoining Churchyard.
