Christmas cheer in Gorey Hockey club

Monkstown 1
Gorey 2

A chilly Saturday afternoon saw Gorey take to the M11 once again for a meeting with Monkstown.

Right from the off Gorey pressed forward and put pressure on the Monkstown defence. Heather O’Sullivan and Robyn Swords kept the play moving down the lines and fed balls forward to Aislinn Buttle and Sadhbh Corcoran. All had shots on goal but none found the back of the net.

In the second quarter, Monkstown came out fighting and make a break into the Gorey circle. Corrina Bailey in goal made a strong save before the ball was cleared off the line by Vicky Hughes. Bridget Kenny and Odile Evans moved the ball forward and Gorey were once again on the attack. Ruth Evans fed numerous balls through to Sarah Merrigan and Muireann Deegan but Gorey struggled to get passed the Monkstown defence.

After half time Gorey increased the urgency with strong solo runs from Sadhbh and from Aislinn. Gorey also had several short corners but were unable to convert.

In the final quarter Gorey continued to push forwards and all the pressure finally paid off when a lifted shot on goal from Sarah was smashed into the back of the net by Aislinn. Gorey’s jubilation was short lived however as a lapse in concentration allowed a breakaway ball from Monkstown and they stole an equaliser against the run of play. Despite only ninety seconds remaining on the clock, Gorey weren’t done yet. With the pressure dial turned to the max Gorey pushed forward and a goal mouth scuffle saw Zoe Kenny push the ball over the line moments before the final whistle blew. Best Christmas present ever as Gorey take all three points back down the M11 and hold their lead at the top of the table.

The Gorey Junior girls team in action at the weekend

Also in action on Saturday were our junior girls teams. Our 5th and 6th class girls started early in Enniscorthy against Wexford. Gorey fielded three teams and everyone put in sterling performances in what was a freezing cold morning. There were lots of goals and great teamwork shown throughout.

Gorey Hockey Club had a busy weekend

They were followed quickly by our 3rd and 4th class girls who played against both Wexford and Enniscorthy. The sun made an appearance as the girls played seven matches and scored plenty of goals.

Finally it was the turn of our junior & senior infants, 1st and 2nd classes. They too played great hockey and enjoyed their chance to play on an AstroTurf pitch and improve their skills.

A great day of hockey all round. Thank you as ever to all the players, coaches and parents and a huge Happy Christmas to you all.
