Making the headlines on this morning’s newspapers is 82 years old Tom Boyle from Ramsgrange, who received the loudest cheers during yesterdays’ conferral ceremony at Waterford Instutute of Technology (WIT) having achieved a Bachelor of Arts in English (Hons) and Irish.

Tom set out to study Law, but changed his mind and moved to Arts, travelled by bus to his studies in Waterford city every day, and now he is celebrated as one of Ireland’s oldest full-time undergraduate students.

Tom decided to return to education at the age of 78 because he wanted to achieve something! “I wanted to achieve something. The college experience was marvellous and everybody in WIT went out of their way to make me welcome. It did me the power of good.”
