Verona Murphy confirmed as FG candidate for Wexford

Fine Gael by-election candidate Verona Murphy flanked by Ministers Paul Kehoe and Michael D'Arcy at the Convention Selection.

Ramsgrange native and President of the Irish Road Haulage Association, Verona Murphy, has been confirmed as the Fine Gael candidate for Wexford in the event of a by-election to fill the seat left vacant when Mick Wallace was elected to the European Parliament in May.

Ms Murphy was already confirmed as the Fine Gael General Election candidate last May and her profile was further endorsed when An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, performed the official opening of her constituency office on Wexford Quay while in Wexford for the opening of the Enniscorthy bypass in July.

Ms. Murphy, on social media tonight, said; “Thank you to all for the support across the board tonight and the well wishes for the campaign ahead. I am honoured to stand and represent the party.”

A by-election is expected before Christmas. Or within six months of the MEP’s taking their seats and that would make the deadline January 2nd. There is speculation as to when the by-election (or a General Election?) may take place, but if Fine Gael are lining up their candidates, they must have inside information. My hunch is a General Election in November or December, just after Brexit!
