Wexford heavyweight boxer Niall ‘Basil’ Kennedy is facing the biggest challenge of his boxing career when he takes on the 2004 United States Olympian Devin Vargas on Saturday night.
The fight is the co-main event at the MGM Springfield in Massachusetts alongside local hero Charles Foster vs Denis Grachev. It will also be broadcast on UFC Fight Pass so it’s a massive event for Kennedy.
Kennedy is far from the average boxer as he fights professionally alongside full-time work as a Garda in Wicklow.
The Gorey native has earned his shot at the big time with a string of impressive results, most recently beating Brendan Barrett via unanimous decision in a six-round contest at Boston’s TD Garden.
The New England and Massachussets state champion [13-0-1, 8KOs] faces his toughest task in Vargas [20-5, 8KOs] though. Vargas’ last bout was a defeat to world champion Andy Ruiz Jr.
Kennedy fights with the Murphys Boxing company under the expert tutelage of Packie Collins and it’s clear that he’s as confident as possible going into the fight after a successful camp.
“We didn’t concentrate too much on him [Vargas], we polished up the dimensions of my own skill-set,” said Kennedy.
“Every boxer will tell you their camp has gone brilliantly in the build up to a big fight but it has gone exceptionally well.”
Kennedy is confident that a win over Vargas would bring a world ranking and a place in the top 20. “This fight can set up massive opportunities for me but I can’t look past Vargas,” said Kennedy.
