The death has occurred of former RTE broadcaster and Irish Press sports editor Michael Fortune, who was a native of Bree, and was a renowned horse racing and greyhound commentator.
Born at Bree Post Office, the son of the late Eugene Fortune, who was one of the leading greyhound trainers of his generation, Michael was educated at Bree National School and De La Salle College, Waterford, before training as a sports journalist with the Irish Press Group.
He covered horse racing and greyhound racing for The Irish Press, raised to the position of Group Sports Editor, and later he worked for The Sunday World and The Racing Post.
Fortune also co-presented ‘Night At The Dogs’ for many years alongside Mícheál O’Muircheartaigh, as well as being a commanding authority in his chosen specialities.
Michael Fortune was a quiet spoken man who never ventured beyond his public persona as a commentator on television, radio or in the printed media, and he never lost his passion for his native county of Wexford.
Deepest sympathy to his wife Rita, children, Ian and Michelle, other relatives and friends. Ar Dheis Dé go raibh an anam.
