The death has occurred of Noel Whelan, (50), barrister, political commentator on national newspapers, radio and television, who was a native of Ballycullane.
His late father, Seamus Whelan was a member of Wexford County Council and currently his brother, Cllr Michael Whelan is a Council member in the New Ross district.
He was a founder member of the New Ross Summer School and brought some leading international figures from the world of politics and academia to the Barrowside town each September and established the event on an international basis.
Mr Whelan was a respected commentator on the national media. He was an adviser to Fianna Fáil and was a candidate for Dublin South East in the 1997 General Election.
He practised as a barrister for 19 years in Dublin, Wexford and Waterford and became a senior counsel in 2018.
Amongst those paying tribute to Mr Whelan is An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, T.D, who said; “So sad to hear that Noel Whelan has passed away. We come from different party backgrounds, but I feel this morning like Ireland has lost a friend. Such a sharp intellect. So articulate and effective on marriage equality.”
WHELAN, S.C., Noel, (Ranelagh, Dublin and formerly of Ballycullane, New Ross, Co. Wexford) who passed away peacefully on July 10, 2019 after a short illness in the care of the heroic staff at St. Vincent’s University Hospital with his loving family by his side. Beloved husband of Sinéad and adoring father of Séamus, son of the late Seamus Whelan and brother of the late Mary Kelly. Loved and missed by his wife, son, mother Myra, his siblings John, Joy, Thomas, James, Annette, Michael, Patrick, Paul, Kevin and Eamon, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended family, and his wide circle of friends, colleagues and fellow citizens.
There will be a gathering of family and friends on Friday afternoon from 4 pm to 6 pm at Fanagans Funeral Home, Dundrum. Removal on Saturday morning to the Church of the Holy Name, Beechwood Avenue, Ranelagh arriving for Funeral Mass at 12 noon and then to Ballycullane Cemetery, New Ross, Co. Wexford arriving at 5 pm approximately. Family flowers only please.
