Wexford native Michelle O’Neill has been selected to be an assistant referee at the Women’s World Cup final between the defending champions USA and the Netherlands on Sunday.

O’Neill was named as one of 48 assistant referees for the tournament back in December and has officiated at a number of the World Cup games already in France.

The 40-year-old from Enniscorthy currently officiates in the SSE Airtricity League and the Continental Tyres Women’s National League and was previously on duty at the women’s Under-20’s World Cup final.

She also worked as an assistant referee at the 2015 World Cup in Canada.

“To be standing in the middle of it all, officiating it in front of 64,000 live spectators and millions across the world, I mean it’s a huge, huge stage of women’s football,” said Michelle, who added; “I just want to go now, I’m super excited and it’s a huge honour to be over there representing Ireland.”

Watch live coverage of the Women’s World Cup final on RTÉ 2, with coverage starting at 3.30 pm. Kick-off at the Stade de Lyon will be at 4 pm.
