94% awaiting ‘Home Help’ are in Co. Wexford

Wexford TD James Browne has criticised the Government for allowing an Eircode lottery to decide home help allocations as County Wexford is the third worst county for people seeking home help.
At the end of April this year, 506 Wexford people awaited the allocation of home help hours. This amounts to 94% of the total number of people seeking a home help service across the south-east.
“Families across Wexford are angry and frustrated with the Government’s approach to home help. Instead of allowing people to live and be cared for in their own homes, they are forcing them into nursing homes and hospitals. This in turn is increasing the strain on our already overburdened hospital system.
“It’s totally unfair that the Government is willing to allow an Eircode lottery decide the fate of people who need home help.
There is no one waiting for home help in the Carlow/Kilkenny area. Yet 506 Wexford people are desperately crying out for home help.
“I have met with many families who are at the end of their tether and deeply concerned that their loved ones will not get the care that they need. This is a deeply distressing situation for them and simply should not be happening.
“Home help services are essential for families across Wexford. The Government’s lack of care for those who need it most is totally unacceptable”, concluded Deputy Browne.
