THE community-focused Bring Your Own Chair project is back in Courtown and Riverchapel on Sunday, May 5th, for Courtown Town Portrait, part of the Street Feast, and gets underway from 2 pm onwards.
Members of the community are asked to join with visual artist, Michelle Browne, and the team at Riverchapel Community Complex for a contemporary barn raising event which will see a temporary structure created to mirror what the much-needed community space for Courtown and Riverchapel could be.
“The 12-sided structure was designed by Michelle Brown and Spanish architect Jon Garbizu using metal and wood and will be assembled by members of the community on the day. Its design was inspired by the former bandstand in Courtown,” Michelle Browne explained.
“We got a fantastic response from the community of Courtown and Riverchapel and the need for a community meeting space came up again and again in the work we did with the local schools, the community and various organisations working in the area.
The contemporary barn raising will be one of many events organised during the Street Feast community event. It is being organised by residents that are part of a newly formed working group. The aim is to bring the community together to enjoy music, food, games and build awareness and support for a much-needed community centre in the area.”
Michelle Browne and her team have worked with selected rural communities across the three counties over the past year, including Courtown. Ballyhack, Taghmon and Bunclody in Wexford. They’ve been examining their layout and design, finding out where their meeting places were and are today.
The Bring Your Own Chair team has also looked at how life has changed since the so-called Celtic Tiger era. Together, they’ve also developed a series of town motifs, pictures and stories around what sets each community apart.
