Welcome for ASTI Conference to Wexford.

Local Elections candidate Joe Ryan welcomes ASTI Conference delegates to Wexford town.

Labour local election candidate Joe Ryan says he is especially pleased that Easter week will see another teachers’ union convention held in Wexford as ASTI delegates descend on Clayton White’s Hotel for three days from Tuesday to Thursday, April 23th-25th inclusive.
Mr Ryan said that as a member of ASTI he is especially pleased that fellow teachers will enjoy the best of what Wexford has to offer boosting the local economy in the process.
Teacher union delegates are now a regular feature of Easter week in Wexford.
“It wasn’t always that way. When I was Mayor in 2010 I wrote to unions asking them to consider using Wexford as a conference venue. One roadblock to possibly hosting union conferences was the need for hotels to allow workers to join a union and to be classified as a ‘fair’ hotel by unions. I am pleased that hotel management and ICTU saw the value in hosting union conventions in Wexford and that Clayton Whites Hotel is now recognised as a ‘fair’ hotel,” said Mr Ryan.
Mr Ryan added that he was pleased that as a consequence workers at Whites were allowed to organise into unions.
“Now Wexford benefits each Easter. Businesses tell me that Easter week has become a very busy time in the business calendar as bed and breakfasts, restaurants, hotels, public houses and shops see a boost in sales.”
Mr Ryan ended by noting that for the first time in almost 40 years the conference is likely to elect a Wexford teacher, Deirdre McDonald as the incoming President of ASTI. Ms McDonald teaches at Wexford CBS and was a fellow colleague of the previous president the late Tony Boland.
