Wexford FC 1
Longford Town 2
Wexford FC came out on the wrong side of a three goal game at a wet Ferrycarrig Park on Friday night in Division 1 of the SSE Airtricity League.
The home-side started sharply, Danny Furlong almost opened his account in the 7th minute, the Longford keeper was certainly on his game to keep it all square.
In the 16th minute, Furlong, with his first of the season, put the home side in front, Jack Doherty found Furlong with a perfectly lofted pass, and Furlong was clinical, he finished superbly to the back of the Longford net.
Danny Furlong with his first goal for Wexford FC this season in tonights narrow defeat to Longford Town at Ferrycarrig Park. Great finish from Danny, super assist from Jack Doherty.⚽️ #wexfordfc

On the half hour mark, Longford had a chance to level, but Corey Chambers made a point blank save. On the stroke of half time Furlong had a chance to double Wexford’s lead, but his shot went over the crossbar.
The home-side certainly had the best of the exchanges in the opening half and were well worth their lead. Darragh O’Connor’s headed goal early in the second half was ruled out for off-side.
On the hour mark, Verdon’s header, for Longford, clipped the post, to left the lead intact.
Twenty minutes remaining, the visitors began to come out on top, in the 77th minute, Sam Verdon grabbed the equalizer from close range, and seven minutes later, Peter Hopkins’ shot, was deflected over the Wexford keeper to make it 2-1 to Longford.
From here Longford ran down the clock, but Darragh O’Connor almost rescued the situation, his effort was only inches away in injury time.
The home-side were the better for much of the game, they certainly deserved to get something from the game, but Longford are now top of the table and Wexford are firmly anchored at the bottom.
