FG want to push pensioners below poverty line; Browne

Wexford TD James Browne has hit out at Fine Gael plans to cap future pension increases.
The Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection intends to make the changes to match pension payment increases to inflation.
It’s likely that Fine Gael’s plans would result in future pension hikes being significantly less than recent increases secured by Fianna Fáil in budget negotiations.
“Fine Gael’s plans are regressive. A lot of County Wexford’s pensioners who receive the state pension struggle at or below the poverty line. If Fine Gael chose to pin pensions to an inflation index, they’ll lock these pensioners into poverty,” Deputy Browne explained.
“My Party and I are willing to examine any proposals to improve the old age pension but only if the starting point ensures that pensioners are at a minimum kept above the poverty line. Anything less is not acceptable. Instead, Fine Gael seem content with a plan to push pensioners below the poverty line”, Deputy Browne concluded.
