Provincials Towns Cup Quarter Final
Enniscorthy advanced to the semi-final of the Towns Cup with a comprehensive win over Tullamore at the Ross Road on Sunday. Scoring seven tries they outclassed a gutsy Tullamore outfit who fought until the bitter end. Tullamore had a big pack and certainly dominated the scrums early on but the hosts ability to move the ball wide at every opportunity was the key to their success.
Enniscorthy went into the game with a number of their first team being rested. They did encounter stiff opposition from the Offaly men early on. But once they scored after 15 minutes the final result never seemed in doubt. They had the benefit of the wind in the first half and led 19-7 at half time.
Playing into the wind in the second half didn’t affect their rhythm and they scored a further four tries. Right wing, Ivan Jacob, who is on fire this season, scored 4 tries with a Man of the Match performance. Left wing, David O’ Dwyer, Centre, Daniel Pim, and influential number 8, Nick Doyle, scored a try a piece. Out half Ivan Poole kicked two conversions, and centre, Killian Lett, kicked one.
Enniscorthy now play rivals Gorey in the Semi Final next Sunday at Wexford. It is certainly going to be a big challenge for the cup holders, as this game is just 6 days before they travel North, in the Round Robin series, in a bid to achieve senior status.
Coach Kieran Hurrell said afterwards, “I was pleased with the performance today. Ivan (Jacob) scoring four tries was special. Gorey next week will be very difficult but our squad is getting stronger. It was great to see the likes of Billy Wickham, Hughie O’ Neill, Joe Carley and Liam Stamp playing big parts today.”
