Wexford’s re-fixed Littlewood’s Ireland Relegation Division 1 play-off game, against Offaly, takes place in Hawkfield, Newbridge, at 2pm on Saturday.
Last Sunday’s game was postponed 30 minutes before the throw in, and Wexford certainly received plenty of unwarranted media attention, and the headline, “Wexford refused to play”, was certainly trending on social media.
As with all things, there are always two sides to this story, Wexford were contacted by the Camogie Association on the Wednesday prior to game, and asked if they would play the match on an astro pitch, which they declined to do.
Roll the clock forward then to the day of the match, many spectators were surprised to see the Parnell pitch deemed unplayable, Wexford officials were then asked if they would play the game on the all-weather pitch, unfortunately the Wexford players did not have the appropriate footwear with them, to play on the astro pitch. One has to commend the Wexford management for reaching that decision, as allowing the game to go ahead would surely have had health and safety issues.
