Enniscorthy’s ladies first XI – league champions – were in action against a strong Muckross side at St Teresian’s School on Saturday.
With the possibility of meeting them in the cup final, this was not going to be an easy task. Enniscorthy started well in the first few minutes with a great work rate from the midfield pairing of Leah Chapman and Ciara Kelly hitting in great balls to the forward line of Sonja Rynhart and May Wickham. A strong defensive set up by the Muckross side wasn’t making it easy for the Slaneysiders as they had very good clearances from inside the circle.
The Muckross forwards kept the Enniscorthy defence on their toes with some well worked balls from the middle of the field. This proved not to be a problem for Watchorn and Smith as they worked the ball smoothly out of the danger zone.
The second half saw some great runs made by Leah Kidd – on her debut with the ladies 1st side – into the forward line. A great stop in midfield by Oglive saw her fly up to the circle and with a smoothly struck shot, she hit the back board seeing Enniscorthy go 1 -0 up, her tenth goal of the season.
A penalty corner just after for the visitors also saw the ball hit the back board, but Ciara Kelly’s effort was deemed to be too high and was not allowed.
Beibhinn O’Brien and Jessie Flood were strong in defence, sweeping up any balls that came their way. Norah McGinty had some great saves during the match, notching up yet another clean sheet. Enniscorthy’s cup final preparations continue with a home league encounter against Skerries on March 23rd.
