Sad loss of racing photographer John Ellard

JOHN ELLARD. Well-known racing photographer.

BY DAN WALSH

It is with great regret that I report the sad passing of well-known point-to-point racing photographer John Ellard which occurred at his home in Birdstown, Broadway, following a short illness.
John was a familiar figure at point-to-point fixtures within the south-east region for a number of decades, having been a vital member of the Healy Racing team that covered all point-to-point and racecourse fixtures for 35 years.
I worked beside John for many years and we often travelled to point-to-points and race meetings together. “He was a loyal friend and good company at all times and he loved his job and in return the racing fraternity admired his friendly approach and his professionalism behind the camera.”
A native of Our Lady’s Island, John, who also worked at Rosslare Europort, was a very popular figure within the point-to-point community, with riders, handlers, owners and regular racegoers alike and will be greatly missed by all within the sport.
The P2P racing website described John as “a gentleman in every sense of the word” and added extended sympathy to John’s family, friends and colleagues at Healy Racing Photographers at this time.

Ellard (Birdstown, Broadway, Co. Wexford and Ex Irish Shipping), Feb 20, 2019, John, beloved son of Peg and the late Niall, brother of Patricia, Helen, Joe and Niall; sadly missed by his loving family, brothers-in-law Willie and Pat, sisters-in-law Suzanne and Carol, aunts, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends. R. I. P.

Reposing in his residence on Friday from 1 pm until 8 pm. Funeral Mass on Saturday at 2pm in Church of the Assumption Our Lady’s Island followed by burial in Our Lady’s Island Cemetery.
