FAI JUNIOR CUP – Gorey Rangers advance to the last 16

Gorey Rangers and Freebooters FC in action in the FAI Junior Cup at Ramstown Park, Gorey.

GOREY RANGERS 2 FREEBOOTERS FC (Kilkenny) 1

Gorey Rangers are in the last 16 of the FAI Junior Cup for the first time since beaten by Carandonagh (Donegal) in 1996 following an emphatic 2-1 victory over Freebooters FC (Kilkenny) at Ramstown Park, Gorey, this afternoon.
A young team with an average age of 22-23 years old, Gorey faced into the game with confidence as would be expected from the 2018 Wexford Cup champions.
Although cold and windy for the spectators, the pitch was in excellent condition and most of the first half was an even game with no chances until just before the interval when the visitors found the net and Gorey were 1-0 down at the break.
After 55 minutes the Kilkenny side lost their goalkeeper. Gorey was playing with a strong wind and began to dominate play when David Behan scored on the 68th minute to level the game. Two minutes later and Paul Brennan put the home side in front and they remained in control until the final whistle.
Overall it was a strong team performance from Rangers with all players giving it their best shot, Eric Quinn was constantly leading the attack, but the Man of the Match tag goes to Paul Brennan who secured that all important winning goal.
Club Chairman Garry O’Brien said the club is delighted with the win.”They were the underdogs today, but they all tried hard. They are a young team and great credit to Ben Casserley (manager) and Tony McCarthy (assistant manager) for all they have done for them,” he told WexfordToday.com
It is a major achievement to get into the final 16 and they are hoping for a home venue when the open draw for the next round takes place in a few days time.
GOREY RANGERS: Sean Allen (goal), Conor Casserley, Ryan Cullen, Stephen O’Mahoney, Garry Murphy, Adam Territ, Gavin O’Brien, Stephen Kinsella, Paul Brennan, Eric Quinn, David Behan. Subs; Glen O’Brien for Garry Murphy; Dylan Vickers for Adam Territ; Gavin Griffiths, Jamie Howard, Dion Leeson, Cillian Cushe and Derek Woods.
The club is into the last 32 in the Leinster Junior Cup and next Sunday they are away to Crettyard, Co. Carlow. Kick-off at 2 pm.
