Denis Hickey flys a winning Wexford flag

DENIS HICKEY saddled winner at Limerick today.

There was a Wexford trained winner at the first day of the Limerick Christmas racing festival today when owner, breeder and trainer Denis Hickey from Garryrichard Stud, Foulksmills, won the Guinness Maiden Hurdle with Buckie Cullen, (7/1).
Ridden by Adamstown jockey Jonathon Moore, Buckie Cullen found plenty on the run-in and scored by a length and a quarter.
Hickey later stated “I don’t know where we’ll go next, we’ll have to find a winners’ of one or handicap next.
“He won two point-to-points last year and is from the same family as Bob Treacy who won two Thyestes Chases for us.
“I had no intention of running him over hurdles only to give him experience and he ran so well in Gowran I said we’d stick at it as it would be a pity no to. He loves jumping but will stay over hurdles for now.”
JJ Slevin from Caim, Enniscorthy, was also amongst the winners at the Munster venue. He scored on Band of Outlaws (2/1) for his cousin, Joseph O’Brien in the opening three-year-old maiden hurdle.
Sean Flanagan from Robinstown, Clonroche, headed to Down Royal with the Noel Meade team and was successful on Getaway Kid (11/2) by three and three quarter lengths in the beginners chase.
