It rained intermittedly in Gorey after 6.30 pm this evening but not enough to dampen the spirits of the thousands of people who lined the Main Street for the annual ‘Switch On’ ceremony signalling the onset of the Christmas spirit.
It was an occasion of joy and celebration, especially for the massive number of children who were delighted with the appearance of their seasonal heroes – Santa and Mrs. Claus!
Amidst massive security to ensure that everybody had a pleasant and safe experience local volunteers and the Gardaí guided the popular bearded Santa as he progressed from the bottom of the Main Street to the top with a police escort showing the way forward.
Meanwhile, his devoted followers were posting their Santa letters into the special postbox outside the Market House.
Eventually Santa received a warm greeting on stage, he waved, pressed the plunger and the whole street became illuminated to a loud cheer from the huge crowd.
This was followed by a new innvovation this year, a spectacular fireworks display.
The message emanting from Gorey was that the Christmas season is well and truly on its way… Merry Christmas everyone!
