Hockey- Wexford 3rd XI win derby game

Enniscorthy's ladies 3rd XI with coach Roy Chapman

The Enniscorthy Ladies 3rd XI beat Wexford 3-1 on Sunday in the opening game of the Sunday League, played at the Astro Active Centre, Enniscorthy.

Wexford started strong, rattled the cathedral town side after winning a goal from a penalty corner early in the gone. Enniscorthy rallied; tidy stickwork from Amy Somers in combination with Brigid Gainford found Melanie Ní Dhuinn, who scored the first goal for Enniscorthy.

Wexford fought back, but they were no match for the Enniscorthy Ladies’ goalkeeper Alice Medcalf, she made a series of spectacular saves. Enniscorthy’s defence worked well throughout the game, Fiona Rothwell and Saoirse Power were quick to prevent Wexford’s attacks on goal, while sweeper Irene Doyle and Nicola Jacob ensured that any breakthrough by the Wexford side amounted to nothing.

Melanie Ní Dhuinn grabbed her second score of the match moments before the half-time whistle. Throughout the second half, a series of penalty corners were awarded to Enniscorthy, no scores resulted from these, despite excellent effort from Lisa Frayne and Tara Somers. Hayley Squire scored Enniscorthy’s third and final goal of the match.

Squad: Alice Medcalf, Saoirse Power, Nicola Jacob, Brigid Kehoe, Bridget Gainford, Tara Somers, Amy Murphy, Lisa Frayne, Fiona Rothwell, Hayley Squire, Melanie Ní Dhuinn, Irene Doyle, Mairéad Neville, Linda Durnan
