Cllr Willie Kavanagh has replaced Cllr Keith Doyle as Cathaoirleach of Enniscorthy Municipal District Council following the annual general meeting held in the Council Chamber at The Presentation Centre this afternoon.
“It is a great honour to be elected,” said Cllr Kavanagh, who was the unanimous choice after being proposed by Cllr Barbara-Anne Murphy and seconded by Cllr Paddy Kavanagh. There was no other proposal.
Cllr Willie Kavanagh is a publican from Oylegate who was unsuccessful in the 2004 local elections. He was overlooked by Fianna Fáil in favour of Blackwater-based Bernie Murphy in 2009, but lost out on a seat in the 2014 election.
He was co-opted to Enniscorthy Municipal District Council in place of James Browne, who was successful in the 2016 General Election. He has been a member of the Fianna Fáil Party for over 40 years.
His wife and family members were present and were accorded a warm welcome by the members and officials.
The chain was handed over by outgoing Cathaoirleach, Cllr Keith Doyle, who congratulated and welcomed the new incumbent and was, himself, the subject of congratuations on the way he conducted council business over the past year and being elevated to Cathaoirleach of Wexford County Council earlier in the day.
Cllr Kathleen Codd-Nolan, proposed by Cllr Paddy Kavanagh, and seconded by Cllr Oliver Walsh, was elected Leas-Cathaoirleach. There was no other proposal.
