A maritime history of Wexford compiled by Ernie Shepherd and entitled ‘Wexford Harbour Commissioners – A History 1794-2010’ was launched by County Wexford Harbour Master, Capt. Phil Murphy at a well attended ceremony in Wexford Library this evening.
Capt. Murphy, who wrote the foreword, said that, unfortunately, due to the siltation of the harbour, combined with ships getting larger and deeper, the port ceased as a commercial operation in the mid-1900’s.
“As current Harbour Master for the port, I’ve often considered the rich maritime heritage of the area, and how it might be recorded for future generations,” said the Wexford man whose family once lived on Rosslare Fort which was completely lost to the harbour.
“The History of Wexford Commissioners does just that and a lot more besides. Ernie has painstakenly researched what many thought were long gone records of the working of the harbour in those all-important years, and his attention to detail is highly impressive,” Capt. Murphy concluded.
Ernie Shepherd said he and his wife, Joy, came to Wexford in 1997 and he did a history course at Maynooth and published two books on local railway history; “Dublin & South Eastern Railway (with Gerry Beesley), published in 1998, and ‘Fishguard & Rosslare Railways & Harbours Company – an illustrated history,” published in 2015.
He explained how he maticulously trawled through the records of Wexford Harbour Commissioners to come up with his latest publication and he expressed thanks to a wide range of people who supported him along the way and he warmly acknowledged their efforts.
Contributions were also forthcoming from the Mayor of Wexford, Cllr Jim Moore, Cathaoirlech of Wexford County Council, Cllr John Hegarty, Madeline Quirke, former-Chairperson of Wexford Chamber of Commerce, and County Archivist, Grainne Doran.
‘Wexford Harbour Commissioners – A History 1794-2010’ by Ernie Shepherd, lightly illustrated, 240 pages, cover illustration by Brian Cleare, published by the author, retail price €25. ISBN 978-1-78808-277-8
